German 1
Tom Carty and Ilse Wührer

Foundations German 1 is a lively, interactive introduction to German. It has been designed and written for complete beginners on a taught course, mostly likely as part of an Institution-wide Language Programme (IWLP) or similar provision in the Higher or Further Education sectors.

• Designed specifically for IWLPs (including language options and electives, Languages for all, Open Learning Programmes and similar) so fits into the 20-24 week teaching year
• Top team of authors with wide experience of IWLPs
• A lively, creative classroon course with integrated pairwork and groupwork opportunities
• Scripted and unscripted dialogues provide a diverse range of audio material
• Contains a comprehensive self-study section for students for non-contact hours
• Written for the non-specialist HE/FE student – filled with relevant examples for the learner and a move away from the more tourist-based approach often found in language courses
• A highly illustrated and attractively laid out course from the publishers of Breakthrough

Two audio cassettes accompany this course. Ask your bookseller for ISBN 1403902569. The price of the cassettes includes a site licence allowing free duplication within an institution – see the Palgrave Macmillan website for details. Tapescripts are available free on request - call 01256 302794 - or can be downloaded from the website.

    Good slightly damaged though

A good book. covers the essentials. Would have been better if the audio cassets were included with the book rather than a seperate purchase. Pronunciation is difficult unless there is an audioversion.

I had to buy this book for a taught Beginner's level German class. I was not satisfied with the book, in my opinion is not very well structured, the grammar explanations are confusing, the exercises boring. Our teacher even told us not to use certain expressions in the book because nobody really says that in German anymore or we might be misunderstood. By the end of the course I didn't even know how to ask somebody in German how are they or how to say I speak/understand a little German. For most of the exercises you need the audio files which, when I bought the book (January 2010), came only as very expensive (£70!!!!) cassettes (Who has a cassette player these days??). I have just looked on Palgrave website, it seems that they have CDs now. Conclusion: I was dissapointed with the book, I had to use other books and audio/video online material to keep pace with the course (which, in the end helped, to be honest). I also need to mention that the book is not meant for individual study, but is to be used in taught classes.

Great book! It was recommended by the course lecturer and it really helped nail down the basics of German. If you're a visual learner like me then you'll appreciate the pictures which go with some of the words you need to learn. Really helps with memorizing!
